I have been asked throughout my life what I believe in and what religion I subscribe to.
My answer has often been I don’t believe in any religion and I believe in many things. I have a much more refined answer these days being someone who thinks of themselves as an educated person.
If asked now my answer would be much longer and a lot less contrite.
I believe in humanity. I believe in the supernatural, paranormal and metaphysical. I believe in the power of our minds, bodies and spirits and I believe in our ability to connect with others on levels that are not obvious and are not limited because of distance, culture or language.
I believe in the Gods of my ancestors. And that my religion is to believe in those Gods of my ancients.
My ancients have wisdom and a knowledge that appears to have been lost to many of us as our technology has advanced. It seems to be an irony that as our world has become smaller because of vast improvements in transportation and travel, and with the advent of the Internet and various communication technologies, we have lost touch with the things that connected us at a spiritual level.
I do a lot of reading and use this to expand my knowledge of different people, different places and different beliefs. There is little doubt in my mind that we share much more in common than what we have been told or what we think.
But for me I cannot subscribe to a belief that one single entity created everything, or was the cause of everything to come into existence.
There is far too much complexity in the world and universe to be covered by one entity. And personally there are aspects to our world that are beyond a single entity or God; namely the existence of supernatural beings and entities. They exist beyond a single creator entity. They are not at the disposition of such a being and cannot be directed by them.
Given the interaction between this world and the Other World, there is, to me at least, a necessity for there to be multiple Gods.
Having many Gods means there is ability for different Gods to cover the many elements we come across in our daily lives. It also makes it more reasonable to call on different Gods and supernatural beings to assist with our daily needs and to help us get what we need and desire in life.
While many Gods may appear to have cross-over coverage of matters with other Gods, this is illusion only. There are subtleties to these ‘crossovers’. Often the matter that is being covered is around the specific elements that one God covers, rather than taking over a matter covered by another God.
However, these are my own mental gymnastics to justify such a belief when the ultimate reason for my belief in multiple Gods and for being a polytheist is that this is what my ancestors believed in. They believed in multiple Gods and as such so do I.
This is really what it boils down to - they believed in polytheism and so must I.
