Runes? What are Runes?

Runes are straight line characters found etched into wood, stone, masonry, pottery and metals. They represented different sounds and letters of the Germanic peoples, but they were more than that. Runes weren't about a writing system but a communication system with divine entities to get answers to burning questions. They hold their own energy and power, and have associations with different Gods and Heroes. Different Runes would be used for protection against evil spirits, others provide protection during battle and others would invoke the sympathy of different Gods.

For those that were trained and mastered Rune casting and Rune reading, they could use the Runes to communicate with the Gods and spirits from the Other World to get answers to burning questions that they or others might have about their future, or the future of close loved ones. Seers were those in the community who possessed these special skills and were sought after by everyone, from farmers to leaders. They were particularly sought after to find out about the success and yield of harvests and whether or not battles would be won or lost.

Anyone who could find a seer could ask them to perform the Rune casting ritual, involving Runes carved into slivers of wood, called lots, with the questioner then tossing 9 lots onto a white sheet or blanket. The seer then looks at the lots, their orientation and reads what the Gods have replied to the question being asked. There were auspicious times and days and the Runes would indicate if answers would be given.

If they indicated it was not a good time or day, there would be no further attempts to seek answers. This was especially important, as any attempt to get answers could result in disaster for the person seeking answers. One of the fundamental elements of the ritual involved having the questioner visualizing their question, repeating with heart and determination that the answer must be revealed before uttering the words as they tossed the lots.
