There are places that call you

Throughout our lives we visit different places that hold a special power over us.

Some hold special meaning to us for a range of reasons. Our childhood memories are filled with such places because of the people there or the occasions that resulted in you being there.

And then there are times in our lives when some of the places we visited earlier in our lives lose their mysterious magic. But there are those places that we visit that call to us.

You might have dreamed about them or they come up in conversations out of what seems like nowhere. These are places that are calling you. They are the places that you think about on random Thursdays for no reason.

These place are calling you because your spirit and the spirits of that place have a connection; and these connections are always deep and always hard to ignore.

I experienced this only a couple of times in my life but the one place that has the loudest voices and the strongest magnetism is Danau Toba in Sumatra.

We drove up from Medan in the late afternoon and despite it taking many, many hours to arrive at our final destination, there was no way I could sleep. The closer we got the louder the voices got. Then I could tell exactly where the lake was despite it being very late at night and very dark and knew we were not far from where we would be staying.

I could smell the lake and hear the waves along with a faint but steady call to get there and stay.

Being there only 24 hours I knew that this was the place I wanted to be. And I wanted to be there with my wife and our family. Even though it's been about month since we were there, I can still hear the sound of the waves, smell the water and feel it on my skins.

I know this is where I need to be and Danau Toba calls to me every night.
