Every religion offers something

While many may claim that religion is something we should retire as longer necessary in our modern world, every religion offers something.

I’ve often derided religion as being a scourge of humanity. I will always stand behind my statements, as they are defendable with a great deal of evidence supporting my statements.

My major problem with organised religion, in particular, is that they have over time tended towards focusing on preaching about aspects instilling fear in its followers rather than more uplifting aspects, as well as becoming corrupted or corrupting the divine messages of the Gods.

But I will also admit that every religion, whether organised or not, has something to offer with elements from which we can learn important lessons.

There are some key aspects to all religions that are taught, like:

The valuable lesson about respecting each other. Every religion has the expectation that you will respect your friends, relatives, neighbours and those who would be considered as a stranger. Respect is something that while intangible is something we all know intrinsically and recognise when we ‘see’ it.

The need to love each other. This is very similar to the teachings around respect. We should love each other as when we love each other, it is much harder to do hateful actions towards others. It also makes it more difficult to be hateful.

A further aspect that has value is charity. Every religion preaches the virtues of charity and the need to be charitable as well as the need to offer charity to those in need. This is something that has been a part of every religion, whether modern or forgotten, through the ages.

These are the kinds of things that are of significant value regardless of the religion. These are universal teachings that you will find in any and every religion. But there are things that are unique to each religion as well.

Whether it is learning about the power of meditation, or the power that is derived from prayer, or the power that comes from regular being called to think about one’s actions and how to be a better human being or do better towards our fellow man. These are the uniqueness of different religions. While they appear to be the same things, they are quite different in important ways, which have value in learning them and their differences.

It is tempting in the modern age to eschew religion, there is great value in learning about different religions and what they teach.

The number one thing we can learn from all religions is to have faith. You don’t need to ‘religious’ to have faith. But I have learned that if your day or week or month hasn't gone the way you’d like, you should never lose faith. Losing faith is the thing that will lead to things going more wrong or continue to go wrong for you,

Make sure you keep an open mind to the lessons that can be learned from every religion. Don’t be scared to learn something new. It is the thing that will make you a stronger person and make your faith stronger too.
